The holiday season is a special time for the Fonthill Lions. Volunteer members come together to deliver warmth, generosity and a sense of belonging throughout Pelham. Their seasonal traditions highlight what it means to serve with heart and create meaningful moments for neighbours of all ages.
For more than 80 years, the Fonthill Lions have been dedicated to strengthening the community. In 1954, the club created the Lions International motto We Serve. It remains a global guiding statement used by members around the world.
Each December, members prepare and sign more than 350 Christmas cards. The cards bring cheer to residents at Lookout Ridge and Shorthills Villa Retirement Communities as well as seniors at 45 and 55 Town Square. Cards are also sent to military personnel. This outreach offers a welcome smile to many who might benefit from an added touch of warmth during the season. It reflects the club’s long-standing commitment to connection and compassion.
The Lions serve hot chocolate during the Town of Pelham’s annual Under the Arches holiday celebration. Families arriving for the festivities are greeted with a warm cup and a friendly hello. The event remains a cherished community tradition and a highlight of Pelham’s winter programming.
The club plays an active role in the annual food drive weekend. Members work together to collect donations that support local food security. They also gather for a club potluck dinner where attendees contribute personal care items along with socks and gloves for Pelham Cares. The evening brings volunteers together in fellowship and ensures essential items reach households that need them.
The Fonthill Lions also host an annual turkey raffle. Proceeds support Pelham Cares, local Scouts and Niagara Resources. The fundraiser brings the community together while helping strengthen programs that benefit youth, families and residents in need.
No season is complete without the Fonthill Lions float in the Santa Claus parade. With generous support from Rice Road Greenhouses and Garden Centre, the float in the recent parade was decorated in festive style. Volunteers walked the route delivering candy canes and sharing holiday cheer with families lining the streets.
President Jane Carr reflects on the club’s busy season with pride. “We go non-stop for basically two weeks to bring holiday joy and giving to the community but it is well worth it. When you see the smiles, the gratitude and the sense of connection that comes from even the smallest act of kindness, you are reminded why we do what we do.”
These traditions show why volunteering with the Fonthill Lions is both fulfilling and deeply meaningful. The experiences strengthen friendships within the club. They also help create a more caring and connected community. Readers are encouraged to consider the impact they can make when they give a little of themselves to others.
